NFL News and Notes

Teams have wrapped up OTA’s and mini-camps and are now enjoying the beginnings of about a five week vacation before returning in late July for training camp. There isn’t a lot that can be gleaned from practices that take place in helmets, jerseys, and shorts, but it is noteworthy that we haven’t heard of any major injuries as of yet. Most news coming out of NFL camps revolves around contract talks, players recovering from offseason surgeries, and other varied off the field issues.

Chargers yet to sign number 3 pick Bosa

Joey Bosa’s NFL career is off to a rather tumultuous start. He is the only player of the top 18 selected who has yet to sign a contract. Bosa skipped the team’s mini-camp as a result of the negotiations. He was taken by San Diego with the number three overall pick out of Ohio State. Bosa is a defensive end who is projected to have a big impact on the Bolt’s defense. Negotiations have reportedly stalled out due to guaranteed money disbursement. It’s never a good thing for a rookie to miss any time leading up to the season.

Texans DT Vince Wilfork to be in ESPN Body Issue

Every year ESPN the Magazine publishes an issue which celebrates the different body types of professional athletes. In the past, athletes such as Serena Williams, Gary Player, Prince Fielder, and Alex Morgan have shown off their assets. This year, Houston’s 325 lb. defensive tackle Vince Wilfork will take part in the festivities. Wilfork is known for his fondness for barbecue and sporting hefty overalls with no shirt underneath. He is also known for being surprisingly nimble and athletic for such a large man. Other athletes in the issue include: Dwayne Wade, Von Miller, Kristen Press, Antonio Brown, Elena Della-Donne, and Conor McGregor.

Former Brown, not named Manziel, is arrested

Davone Bess, a former receiver for the Dolphins and Browns, had to be to be coaxed out of his house in Gilbert, Arizona by a SWAT team over the weekend. Bess allegedly first refused to cooperate during a traffic stop, then held a knife to his throat while closing himself up in his house. He had a previous run-in in 2014, when he was arrested for an incident with a TSA officer in Fort Lauderdale. He was released by the Browns shortly thereafter.

More news and notes

Von Miller and the Broncos still have not agreed to terms on a contract. Miller recently posted on Instagram that he loves his teammates, but he will not play under the franchise tag.

Arian Foster expects to be ready to go for training camp. If only  he could fine a team. Foster is still hungry to get back on the field after working hard to rehab a torn Achilles tendon. So far, only the Dolphins have expressed interest. Foster has been very injury prone, but he could possibly be a steal for a team looking for a quality back up.

Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox just signed a mega-deal. The contract is worth $103 million over 6 years with $63 million guaranteed. Cox had 9.5 sacks in 2015. He now will make more money than many quarterbacks in the league.

Greg Hardy, formerly of the Cowboys and Panthers, is still looking for work. Hardy, who was accused of domestic violence in 2014 played just one year for Dallas after being dismissed in Carolina. He’s a talented pass rusher, but he is also a maniac. I would be surprised if anyone picks him up.
