As teams continue to work their way through OTA’s, there’s no shortage of off the field news in the NFL. This past weekend was no exception. Let’s take a look at what went down.
Aqib Talib is shot outside Dallas Strip Club
Denver cornerback Aqib Talib suffered a gunshot wound to his lower right leg early Sunday morning. He reportedly had no major damage and will be released from the hospital on Monday. One other person was also shot during the incident at the Vlive, a strip club in Dallas.
There aren’t a lot of details as to exactly what happened, but it’s clear that Talib is lucky to have come away with just a minor injury. There is even speculation that Talib accidentally shot himself during the altercation. This isn’t his first time in the headlines for off the field behavior.
- In 2009, Talib was arrested in Florida after allegedly assaulting a taxi driver.
- In 2011, Talib was arrested in Dallas for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, after allegedly shooting at his sister’s boyfriend.
- In 2015, on the field, Talib was suspended for a game after poking a Colts player in the eye. He was then fined $26,044 for two personal foul penalties he incurred during the Super Bowl.
Manziel’s Downward Spiral Continues
The latest black mark on Manziel’s record comes in the form of a lawsuit file by a real estate broker in Los Angeles. The suit stems from an incident in April. Manziel rented a house for two days, apparently for no other reason than to throw a couple of massive parties. The parties were so festive in fact, that police showed up at one point to settle things down.
According to the broker, the parties involved heavy drug and alcohol abuse. This comes as no surprise considering Manziel’s recent history. The former Cleveland Brown and his posse reportedly caused $32,000 worth of damage during their drunken escapades. There was even a reported sighting of Slater, of “Dazed and Confused” fame.
Real estate broker Nicholas Goodwin had this to say regarding the scene on the day Manziel was supposed to check out.
“They were supposed to check out at noon,” Goodwin said. “Manziel was passed out. … There was cocaine all over the kitchen table, and mushrooms were still out on the table in front of him. There was booze everywhere…broken glasses over the floor and a Champagne glass in a tree.”
Manziel has recently been spotted getting a tattoo on an airplane and looking very emaciated. The term “No news is good news” is very literally when it coms to JFF. Somebody in his inner circle needs to step up and get him help or this is not going to end well for the former Heisman Trophy winner.
Wade Phillips gets Roasted
Denver defensive coordinator Wade Phillips was surrounded by family, friends and current and former players on Saturday night in his hometown of Port Arthur, TX. They got together to roast Phillips, who is highly regarded by all of those who’ve been fortunate enough to know him.
Roasters included: Peyton Manning, Jim Nantz, J.J. Watt, Aqib Talib, Gary Kubiak, and Chris Berman among others. Some were done via video, but many of the roasters were in attendance. Phillips has been an NFL coach for 39 years. 34 of those have been spent as a d-coordinator, but he also had head coaching stints at Buffalo and Dallas.
Here is Watt’s roast from Saturday night:
